Empress Hoshi Sato by Glee-chan Empress Hoshi Sato by Glee-chan
I recently got booted from a dA Star Trek group for voicing my opinions on Enterprise and Abram's Trek. I don't want to get into the details, but the majority of the reason was because I favored TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY over ENT and Abrams. Apparently this was horrible... I guess.

Anyway I decided to do an Enterprise piece just for the hell of it. I took one of the only decent characters from that horrible show and did a picture of her. In my opinion, Hoshi, Mayweather and Phlox were the only decent characters (if you can call them that, they were generally glorified extras). But Cardboard Reed, Redneck Tucker, and Over-actor Archer got all the stories, and T'Pol was there cause her boobs were big - and is probably the worst vulcan ever to be depicted on Star Trek (in Blalock's version of emotionless was being moody and cranky....).

Just so you know, Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry and is owned by Paramount. That is not to say Enterprise is Star Trek. It only pretends to be... Enterprise is he brainchild of Rick Berman and Brannon Braga and any similarities to Star Trek are completely coincidental. Linda Park portrayed Hoshi Sato.

The Mirror Universe episodes had the best Hoshi bits in them. Unfortunately. Why couldn't they just have written fewer bullshit stories for Archer and T'Pol and more for Hoshi and Mayweather? At least they both get more screentime in Demons and Terra Prime, which has a much better character balance than the rest of the show.

I felt sorry for Mayweather.  All he did was sit up front, smile all big, and drive like he was some goofy chauffeur.   All he needed was a Kato uniform and talk in a stereotypical accent.  But I agree.  The minor characters had next to no screentime.  Same with Voyager, only not as bad.

I was one of several admins in that group. Part of an admins tasks is to approve or disapprove art submitted. Well, since there are several admins, that means it's more or less a vote. I said all that to say that I got booted out because I voted how I wanted. I just felt that not every thing submitted HAD to be in the gallery. Especially if it was like stick figures and such. The funny thins is that they could always over rule me... since I was one vote. But not voting with the majority made me the bad guy so they wanted me to step down. I did one better and left the group, lol. That's the whole story.

It's sort of how the original generation of fans felt when Jar-Jar Lucas took the Star Wars universe and oriented it around their kids, or grandkids. What was once an epic adventure saga is now just another series on Cartoon Network, and the desires of the older fans who made the franchise a success are ignored. You see it now with Trek, the official sci-fi adventure of the 16-25 set. If, in the next Trek movie, the captain of the Enterprise is Justin Bieber, I won't be a bit surprised.

You shouldn't have been booted for simply having a contrary opinion. What do they want, a choir? Everyone singing the same song in the same pitch? I worry about the direction of our country and our society when disagreement is not tolerated.
I for one really enjoyed Enterprise, but don't care if others didn't. Conversely, I hated the new Trek movie with its "high-school" cast and loud, flashy, empty plot--and don't care if others liked it. When you grow up in a big family, you quickly become accustomed to disagreement and a practical, "live-and-let-live" attitude.
As a fan, Glee-chan, you are as entitled to your opinion(s) as anyone else.
Really like your "Empress Hoshi" picture. One of my favorites from the show. :)

Thanks you so much. I'm glad you support me. My views on Enterprise have soften since the time I've done this picture... mostly because my hatred for Abram's Trek has filled it up. Now all of a sudden some of the dumbness of Enterprise doesn't seem bad anymore.

One thing I liked about the Terran Empire, their women's military Uniforms. I wonder if the Midriff trend went well into the Star Trek Original movies Era. (Sorrows of Empire, reign of Hoshi Sato III) I'd love to see the Mirror take on those Red Uniforms.

Personally I liked Enterprise better than most the others and Reed was my fave character. He was one of the few that had character developement (but as you said he was in them a little more than some of the others). However, I respect your opinion on the series. We each like what we like.

But on to your drawing. I think its great. Her face is just adorable. The grin just makes the piece.

I respect what Enterprise was trying to do, and love a lot of aspects of it. After hearing a LONG interview with Rick Berman (seriously it was like 2 hours long or so) he explained the choices and what the demands were. So I'm a bit more forgiving towards Enterprise now that I was when I did this picture. There certainly were Star Trek worthy episodes in the show, even if the majority of it didn't quite get there, in my opinion. I would have loved to see more shows about Mayweather, Phlox, Reed, and Hoshi, but I think they were purposely doing more shows with T'Boob, Archer, and Tripp to try and recreate that Kirk, Bones, and Spock feel. If you have it you have it, and you can't force something like that original trio.

Thank you so much for you comment, I really do appreciate feedback. So often I just get the standard "great job" or "she's hot" sort of comments so its nice to have something to say back. On a side note, I'd take Enterprise with all it's Enterpriseness over Abram's Trek any day.

I know. I tried to like it. I really did. If Brent Spiner isn't in it though, I just don't care. It's just so damn boring. T'Pol annoys the hell out of me too. Star Trek isn't for staring at boobs, or so I thought. There's whole networks for that (ie Spike).

But I love Deep Space Nine. It's the opposite of boring and has great characters (besides the Ferengis).

Star Trek isn't for staring at boobs? They didn't know that while designing all the TOS female costumes :D:D

I agree that many Enterprise episodes were boring but I watched it because I liked some of the characters (Reed, Trip, Hoshi). I think it was worth it for the few very good episodes and the many good ones.

My fav are the same as you, except I thought ENT was a little better than VOY.
But I never cared for the storylines in either.
Also, Hoshi looks very happy to be shooting whoever that is.

I agree with you whole heartedly about ENT I just watched all the seasons for the first time and I must say... T'Pol was the most Fasionable Vulcan EVER!!!! One episode her uniform changed at least 5 times.... I found the series quite amusing as an alternate universe... but it has nothing to do with the rest of the Star Trek Universe...
As for the new Trek movie I was satisfied with the explanation they gave of an altered timeline... while I agree the ships were a little over re done I still did enjoy it!!!

And GREAT JOB on MU Hoshi!!! I like the emotion in it and it feels alive!!!

Thanks so much!

In regards to the Abrams Trek film, I don't think "alternative universe" can explain all the problems that script had. (Nero's lame revenge plot, the inconsistencies of what Red Matter actually did, Chekov being a graduate at the same time as the rest of the cast, and Kirk getting command of the flagship of the federation without even graduating the Academy...) Overall, I agree, that its a good starting point from what they had to work with - as they had so much explaining to do in that film. But some brainless choices that could have been easily fixed in another draft could have fixed some of the major problems. In the end, it just felt like another summer action film, and not Star Trek at all.

Sorry for the long rant! Thanks again for all your great encouragement.

I hated Abrams Trek film with all my heart when I first watched it but then I watched it again and just enjoyed the action and the good moments (Sulu, Kirk and Olson will do the jump... guess who's not coming back! And the drill coming closer and closer to the academy with HUNDREDS of students in their red shirts :D)...

Not Trek at all, but I think it sets a good ground with all the explanation for future films to become Trek. After all, the "intro" was at the end, so maybe the real Trek will start with the second film :D I have hope.

I agree with you in that Abrams Trek had to lay the ground work for the next series of films. So I can forgive some of the sloppy writing, and forgive some of the canon inconstancies being that's its in an alternative timeline. But I can't forgive everything.

The action set pieces were good, but that's all I can say. Like you said, it wasn't Star Trek. It was something similar with Star Trek's named tacked on. I'm with you on hoping that the next film will be the film that I wanted to see the first time around. They have NO excuses now. They established everyone, they had a whole film to learn what worked and what didn't, and they have time to actually look into TOS and mine some good. And Please no more Lens flares. I didn't have a probably with the cast, I liked the Spock/Uhura twist, and the costumes and props were good. (I hated the Bridge and the New Enterprise... it looked like Flash Gordon built the ship).

So I hope with the next film is good. I'm a huge Trekkie and I miss not having a TV show to watch, so I'm hoping the films will generate a new interest in the series. But if this next film is more of the same from the previous film, I think I might have to give up on Abrams. I don't know why they hired a Star Wars fan to head it's biggest rival Star Trek?

I personally loved ENT and the latest Star Trek movie, and so obviously I kind of disagree with some of your comment... ^^; But that's all right. To each his/her own. DS9 will always be my number one in the series, and TWOK & TVH & FC my favourite movies, but whatever.

Anyways, onto the actual picture. xD; It's an interesting style for a a Star Trek piece. Since you didn't ask, I won't crit, but it looks really good. I especially like what you've done with her face. Great work!

LOL homg which group kicked you out?! I've only seen the first few eps of Enterprise... I do intend to try watch it all though, but it... wasn't good... to say the least :XD: Hmm, I also wasn't too fussed on the new movie. Instead of actually building on the characters they kinda... parodied them. And it was a bit 'in your face'. I prefer the subtlety of TNG and DS9.

The problem with Star Trek films (and this also goes to the good ones) is that they forget the "seek out new life and new civilizations" part. While I love a lot of Star Trek film, the majority of them are about battles instead of exploring or issues. The best Star Trek episodes usually was about something, and scifi was just there to give it a pretty covering.

That being said, I don't know if a film could be about exploring or some kind of issue. Films have to start and wrap up in a certain amount of time, and movie-goers generally don't leave their houses to watch a morality play. They want to see people kiss and things blow up. I think Star Trek is at it's best as a television medium where they can afford to have battles but at the same time explore something new and talk about some kinda of issues.

I don't really know what the point was to all that ranting as I really didn't say anything. lol, Sorry!

I agree with you on this! TOS is the classic, and TNG, DS9 and Voy were fantastic, too. The new movie, whilst being a great movie (eg. great special effects, screenplay etc) didn't really feel like Star Trek and the alternate reality bs is really getting on my nerves. I didn't MIND the movie, really enjoyed SOME parts of it, but there were many things about it I hated. (Not least Uhura). ENT sucked, I agree with you there, though I actually thought the 4th season of ENT was really good. If you didn't get as far as season 4, I'd recommend giving it a watch (just skip the first 4 seasons lol)

What group did you get booted on? Can I read the thread? i'd be curious to read about your views, and the views of whoever responded. I'd like to see what their argument is XD it does strike me as odd... Star Trek has always had this idea of mutual understanding and acceptance, and you get booted from a group of these people who supposedly embrace this view, because your opinion is different? *Sigh*
